A while ago I decided I want to build a racing “sim” setup, since, well, I want to.

Things got busy and so I haven’t really been able to start, until now. Thanks to the wonders of the internet and Christmas, I finally have a seat suitable for pretending to race in. This is enough (along with the wheel/pedals/shifter I got a while ago) for me to start putting this thing together. At this rate, it’ll be done just in time to have to take it apart to move in the Spring.

(Not shown: In the closet behind the seat, my 3D printer is making parts for my real car)

So far, progress has consisted of putting the sliders on the seat and thinking about how it will go together. Like most things, I want this done right and done well, but I’m still trying to be somewhat cheap. Any input along the way will be appreciated.

Next stage is figuring out how high the surface of the seat should be, relative to the pedals, and how much further from the front of the seat the pedals should be than the wheel. Also where the wheel goes, verically. Basically, where everything goes still needs to be figured out. I haven’t even consider the shifter mount yet.

You’re free to pull any information you can from my sim rig posts:

Thanks! I was thinking that the width of a 2x4 would be a reasonable height for the chair to sit above the ‘floor’ of the sim, and I see you did the same way. I suppose if it’s too low I can always shim it down the line.

Once I figure that out I’ll try to figure out where-about the pedals go (since the seat slides though it doesn’t have to be exact). The wheel itself should follow from that, I’d imagine.

I’m doing mine in one piece, though like anything held together with wood screws it should be pretty easy to take apart when needed (i.e. when I move and can’t get it to the door, not to mention out).

That looks like it is going to be a sweet setup!

My good news is that one of the upstairs bedrooms is currently being demolished in my house so I can put in new walls and make it into my man cave! In the garage is a seat out of a Chrysler Conquest TSi that I got out of of a car at a pick ‘n’ Pull.

Keep us posted as I may pull inspiration/ideas from your build.

I’m starting a racing sim build this weekend using an old race seat (pictured: same model, somebody else’s pic).

Bought some square tube this week and the plan is to build a bracket in three sections that connect together: TV stand, wheel/pedals mount, & seat stand. When it’s all together, it will live out in the garage with the PS3 and GT wheel to play older games on an old 720 tv I have. Then if I want, I can pull the wheel/pedals off and use that mount section inside with my G920 and xbone - with or without the seat attached (don’t have a ton of space in the living room).

I’ll be sure to post my progress this weekend.

Very cool! I’ve been pretty busy, and will be in Detroit this weekend (for the auto show) so progress is slow, but I’m thinking this coming week I’ll figure out the seat mounts and platform to build the rest off of.
